At the University of Maine at Machias, we believe how you live and what you learn are intricately connected to where you are. What sets UMM apart?
What sets UMM apart from many other universities is the close relationship between the University and surrounding communities. You’ll find first-year students interning at local businesses and performing hands-on research in the regional shellfish, aquaculture, and fishing industries and at the nationally recognized UMM Marine Science Field Station. Students in the Education program are placed in local classrooms their first semester, observing, learning, and teaching. Recreation and Tourism Management students enjoy an immediate opportunity to explore our 243-acre campus classroom, composed of woods, blueberry fields, hiking trails, former railroad beds, lakes, and rivers. In addition, students learn from more than20 state and national conservation and forestry organizations. Our English, Creative Writing, and Book Arts students work with local schools to work on publishing, letterpress printing, and digital media. Service-based learning is central to our Psychology and Community Studies program, with students getting involved with local charities and nonprofits in the surrounding area. When you graduate, you will be well prepared to find a good job in your chosen field.
Community engagement
The Machias community is very much a part of the University community. Locals attend Clipper basketball, soccer, and volleyball games; use the pool, training facilities, and gym at the Reynolds Center; and attend theater and music programs at the Performing Arts Center. Cultures, generations, and world-views come together at UMM in a way that is distinct from other universities. Students learn and live in an environment with carefully cultivated access to a real, thriving community with a wide array of internships, social connections, and other opportunities.
Affordability
UMM is one of the most affordable four-year colleges in Maine and New England. We provide generous merit- and need-based aid packages. Ninety-nine percent of our students receive some form of financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans, and on-campus jobs.
Where do our students go?
Employers know that UMM graduates have the hands-on skills to hit the ground running, which is why we have recent alumni working in very diverse areas. We have alumni working with the Patriots at Gillette Stadium, doing world-class research at The Jackson Laboratory, and working at the Bridger-Teton National Forest, the National Marine Fisheries Service in the Bering Sea, and many other organizations and industries.
